FIRE PROCEDURES
In the event of an emergency, the five minutes it takes to read this now may be a good investment.
RECEPTION – DIAL 0

The fire exits
The fire exits on your floor are clearly marked, but if there is heavy smoke you may have difficulty locating them. So please take the time to observe the following points:
Count the number of doors between your door and at least two emergency exits.
Check the location of fire extinguishers, hoses and alarms in the corridor of your floor.
Understand the air-conditioning controls in your room (on-off switch).

If you notice a fire – RECEPTION
(If the fire is small, extinguish it and report your action to the hotel telephone operator immediately).

Activate the nearest fire alarm.

Call the hotel front desk.

Leave the building; if possible, take your room key with you.

Close door(s) to guard against the fire if unable to leave your room.

If a fire starts in your room – RECEPTION

Evacuate your room immediately… Take your room Key.

Close the door securely behind you.

Activate a fire alarm and notify your immediate neighbors.

Call the hotel front desk on the nearest phone. Walk to safety via the emergency exit.

Do not use the elevator

If evacuating upon hearing the fire alarm

Take your room key, and move cautiously.

Feel the door and handle with the palm of your hand. If the door or handle is hot or abnormally warm, don’t open it. If the door is not hot, open it carefully, but be ready to close it immediately if necessary.

If there is smoke in the corridor, go back to your room. If not, make your way toward the closest emergency exit.

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR.

Remain calm, and be sure to hold the banister.

If you must remain in your room – RECEPTION

Turn off the air-conditioning.

Fill the bathtub with water. (As a water reserve only)

Specify your location to the hotel front desk.

Stuff wet towels and sheets around the door sills and air vents. This will keep the smoke from infiltrating. Use the waste basket to bail water from the bathtub if smoke seeps in.

Remove drapes from the window.

If smoke still enters your room, make a tent over your head with a wet blanket.

If you require special assistance

If you require special assistance due to personal physical limitations, advise the hotel reception personnel upon check-in or as soon as possible afterwards.

Remember…

Most fatalities occur from inhalation of smoke and poisonous gases, not from the fire itself. Always stay low to the ground if there is any smoke at all. Never use the elevator.

It may never happen to you

You may never need to implement this advice, but since you should always stay alert for the unexpected, be diligent and always note exits and emergency procedures of any high-rise building in which you enter.
